BEAUFORT, Lebanon — The Israel Defense Forces discovered approximately 700 tons of explosives within a tunnel complex near the northern border on Wednesday, marking one of the largest caches of munitions found since the escalation of hostilities began. Israeli troops identified the stockpile in the Beaufort area, also known as Qalaat al-Shaqif, during operations to clear subterranean infrastructure linked to Hezbollah.

The discovery occurred late Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday morning as soldiers advanced through a network of tunnels previously suspected of being used for cross-border infiltration. Military officials stated that the sheer volume of high-grade explosives indicates they were prepositioned specifically for large-scale offensive operations rather than routine defensive use or storage. Hezbollah has not officially commented on the specific quantity found in Beaufort but maintains that its military assets are designed for deterrence against Israeli aggression. Iranian-backed militias operating in southern Lebanon have historically utilized extensive tunnel systems to move fighters and supplies undetected, a tactic that has complicated ground operations by both sides since October 2023.
